Except for in 1982, 1984 and 1996, the posted mileage has decreased over each preceding year. In 1982 and 1984, a number of perimeter roads were added to the highway system. In 1996, the increase in mileage posted can be attributed to the use of scientific data from Falling-Weight Deflectometer testing that indicated a greater number of highway miles were weak and required posting. In 1970, at the suggestion of the trucking industry, we tried a speed reduction to 40 MPH instead of a weight reduction on some highways. In 1972, we expanded the number of highways with a speed reduction by several hundred miles. In 1981, due to the 55 MPH speed limit and what we felt was a small difference between 40 MPH and 55 MPH, we eliminated the speed reduction posting entirely.
