Maintenance / Trucker Info / Bridge Weight Limit Map / Instructions / Example

EXAMPLE: Determine all the legal weights and maximum weights for the following 8 axle vehicle for a blue colored road section. Determine the maximum weights for movement with no restrictions and with restrictions. All tires are 10.00 R 20’s and axles 2 thru 8 have dual tires.

Solution: The legal weight and the maximum weight on steering axle are limited by tire size: 2 tires at 10 inches each times 600 pounds/inch width is 12,000 pounds.

Legal Weight Example

The gross weight for the above vehicle is 88,000 pounds plus 12,000 pounds or 100,000 pounds. The weight on axles 2 thru 4 cannot exceed 43,000 pounds and the weight on axles 5 thru 8 cannot exceed 50,500 pounds. Note that with 11.00 tires on the front axle, it would be possible to carry 13,200 pounds on the front axle but the gross weight would be limited to 101,000 pounds.

The maximum weights without restrictions would be (see Load Factor Table - blue and unrestricted) 1.25 multiplied by the limits given above with the exception of the front axle. Note that the front axle is already loaded to the limit based on the 600 pounds/inch width of tire limitation. The maximum gross weight would be (88,000 X 1.25) 110,000 pounds plus 12,000 pounds or 122,000 pounds. The weight on axles 2 thru 4 cannot exceed (43,000 X 1.25) 53,750 pounds and the weight on axles 5 thru 8 cannot exceed (50,500 X 1.25) 63,125 pounds.

The maximum weights with five miles per hour and centerline bridge restrictions would be (see Load Factor Table - blue and restricted) 1.45 multiplied by the limits given above with the exception of the front axle. Again, the front axle is an exception because it is already loaded to the limit based on the 600 pounds/inch width of tire limitation. The maximum gross weight would be (88,000 X 1.45) 127,600 pounds plus 12,000 pounds or 139,600 pounds. The maximum weight on axles 2 thru 4 cannot exceed (43,000 X 1.45) 62,350 pounds and the maximum weight on axles 5 thru 8 cannot exceed (50,500 X 1.45) 73,225 pounds.
