MUTCD
The
South Dakota Department of Transportation has adopted the
Millennium Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as the
official manual for traffic control. The manual can be viewed in it's entirety at the Federal
Highway Administrations (FHWA) web site at the following location:

NCHRP 350
Traffic Control Devices in Work Zones must be crashworthy in
accordance with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) 350 for each of
the following categories and effective the dates shown:
Category I All devices must be
compliant.
Category II All devices placed into
service prior to October 1, 2000 will be allowed until
October 1, 2002. All devices placed into service after
October 1, 2000 must be
compliant.
Category III Portable Sign Trailers used after
January 1, 2003 must be compliant.
All other Category III devices placed into service prior to
October 1, 2002 will be
allowed until October 1, 2007.
