SDDOT / Transportation Inventory Management / Traffic Monitoring
The Traffic Monitoring section provide for the collection, retention and analysis of data, which indicates the volumes, classification, weights, speeds and other characteristics of motor vehicles that traverse South Dakota highways and streets. This information is necessary to adequately assess pavement life, investment levels needed to improve or maintain the State's highway system, to design pavement surfacing and geometrics and assess safety.
Traffic at over 6,600 locations are monitored throughout the state. In order to maximize efficiency, sampling techniques and automatic recording equipment are utilized whenever possible.
