Information and referral to other sources of information is available for bicycling and pedestrian activities. Several maps are available to assist with planning a tour in South Dakota.
The Roadway Characteristics Map illustrates highways with narrow widths, gravel shoulders, or rumble strips and the map can be accessed at: Roadway Characteristics Map.
The Traffic Flow Map shows the volume of car and truck traffic upon state highways. The Traffic Flow Map is available at: http://www.sddot.com/pe/data/traf_maps.asp
The Roadway Characteristics Map when coupled with the Traffic Flow Map can assist bicyclists in determining alternate routes. A narrow roadway with a low traffic volume may be given consideration as a possible route.
The Highway Construction Map illustrates in progress construction projects upon the State Highway System.
The map is updated each month during the construction season and can be accessed at: Construction Map or Safe Travel USA (SD 511).
The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program Map (STIP) - Adobe PDF File - can be used for long-term route planning as the map shows proposed construction projects on state highways during the next 5 years. The projects are subject to change and bicyclists should consult the Highway Construction Map prior to embarking on their trip.
Hard copies of the above referenced map are available upon request by contacting: Craig.McIntyre@state.sd.us
Weather & road condition information is an important component when planning an excursion. Weather information can be obtained at: Safe Travel USA (SD 511)
