Update in Road Design Manual Chapter 13 - Interchanges
References to Metric units have been removed.
Figure titled "Interchanges - General Types and Terminology" has been removed.
Section titled "Preliminary Design" has been removed
Figure titled "Diamond Interchanges, Conventional Arrangements" has been removed.
Table titled "Design Widths of Pavements for Turning Roadways" has been removed.
Page 13-3 - Interchange types has been increased to eight to include the Single Point Interchange
Page 13-5 - Additional criteria for Ramp Naming Convention (formerly Ramp Nomenclature) has been added.
Page 13-7 - Section "Ramps" now contains information previously found under "Ramp Location and Alignment". The layout of ramp alignments has been revised to be on the inside edge of the driving lane for ease of design with InRoads software. Information regarding the skewed intersection of mainline and the cross road has been added.
Page 13-8 - Figure 13-3 Ramp Typical Section has been updated. Updated off-ramp taper length and on-ramp parallel acceleration lane length.
Page 13-9 - Figure 13-4 Typical Diamond Interchange Used by SDDOT has been updated.
Page 13-10 - Table 13-1 Minimum Acceleration Lengths for Entrance Terminals with Flat Grades of 2 Percent or Less has been updated.
Page 13-11 - Table 13-2 Minimum Deceleration Lengths for Exit Terminals with Flat Grades of 2 Percent or Less has been updated.
Page 13-12 - Section "Loop Ramps" added.
Page 13-13 - Section "Gore Areas" has been added and includes information previously found under "Turn-Lane Cross-Slope Rollover".
Page 13-14 - Figure 13-6 Gore Detail has been updated.
Page 13-15 - Figure 13-7 Cross Slopes in the Gore Area replaces the former Figure titled "Typical Pavement Layout at Gore Area".
Page 13-17 - Design criteria for Single Point Interchanges has been added to Ramp Shoulders and Curbs.
Page 13-18 - Design criteria for Single Point Interchanges has been added to Designing Gradeline. Information for creating the gradeline adjacent to mainline and direction for designing the ramp gradeline at the terminal end near the cross road has been added.
Page 13-19 - In paragraph one of "Check Geometrics for Sight Distance Required", the criteria determining the need for a design exception was deleted. Figure 13-8 Measurement of Horizontal Sight Distance at Ramp Terminals has been updated.
Page 13-20 - The criteria for checking Case B2 in the first bullet and the criteria for Case F was removed. In the last paragraph, the reference to Case B2 was removed.
Page 13-21 - Reference to AASHTO WB vehicle heights of eye has been removed.
Page 13-22 - Section "Single Point Interchange (SPI)" has been added with examples of SPI's in South Dakota.
Page 13-23 - Section "Pavement Sections" has been added.
Page 13-24 - Information for existing Control of Access at existing interchanges has been added in the second paragraph.
Page 13-25 - Control of Access length criteria has been updated for new construction. The fourth paragraph has been added referencing Chapter 17 - Access Management of the Road Design Manual. The Control of Access note for the construction plans title sheet has been revised. References to the Right-of-Way office for a resolution number have been removed. Figure 13-12 has been updated with 660' Control of Access length.
