Truck Weight Enforcement

Truck weight enforcement is not only a matter of economics, but also a matter of public safety. Illegal loads not only make roads rougher, but also create deep ruts that can fill with rainwater or ice, making driving more dangerous for everyone.

The SDDOT published this brochure to educate the public about the effects of illegal loads. It is available here in Adobe PDF format.

Example: This Tripp County structure was destroyed during 2002 as a result of a local landowner hauling a load of hay, in excess of the posted weight limit of the bridge, over the structure causing it to collapse. The structure was posted for 6 tons.

This is not the first time this structure has sustained damage. Over the past several years Tripp County has had to replace almost all of the stringers, evidence that it was common practice for loads in excess of the posted weight limit to be hauled over the structure.
