With the advent of meeting new crash testing requirements in NCHRP 350, the South Dakota Department of Transportation is concerned with its present bridge end system meeting the test requirements. Some failing tests of W-beam rail have already been reported. The present system is thrie-beam to W-beam to three-cable. The use of higher profile crash test vehicles may cause non-passing crash tests for the present system. The four-cable system proposed for testing is balanced, with its top cable higher than the top cable of the three-cable system and its bottom cable lower than the bottom cable of the three-cable system. This is expected to help control both high and low profile vehicles. The cable would transition directly to thrie-beam, with no intermediate run of W-beam. Three cable guardrail will not match up with thrie beam guardrail.
