Problem Statement:This study investigated the effectiveness and ease of use of a flexible moldboard plow manufactured by Frink America. Video was taken to determine the plows effectiveness at reducing the snow cloud obscuring the plow. The video and interviews of snow plow operators revealed that the flexible plow is simple to use and effective at directing the snow in a narrow column off of the roadway. Due to lack of snow accumulations and other associated problems, the research took over two years to complete. The researcher recommended that the SDDOT purchase flexible moldboard plows to increase plowing efficiency, to increase operator visibility, and to reduce the snow cloud thereby increasing the visibility of the truck. The researcher recommended that the plows be purchased when a reduction in snow clouds is important and higher speeds justify its use. With the increased efficiency and the reduced man-hours, the flexible plows cost can often be recovered within two or three years.
