Title: Crash Testing of Road Closure Gates
Project Researcher: Barry Rossen,
Project Manager: Paul Orth
Research Period: -
Status:
Cost: $0.00

Problem Statement:Road closure gates have been installed at various locations on South Dakota highways to prevent the public from traveling during inclement weather and hazardous situations. To satisfy FHWA requirements, SDDOT needs to crash test these gates in accordance with guidelines defined in NCHRP Report 350.

Findings:

Research Objectives:
1  To determine if SDDOT closure gates meet the NCHRP 350 crash test requirements.

Research Tasks:
1  Review gate design and advise panel of modifications, only if necessary.
2  Perform high speed crash test in accordance with NCHRP 350 testing criteria on a standard SDDOT road closure gate in a typical installation while in the stowed position. Verbally notify panel of results.
3  If the gate fails the test, confer with panel for possible design changes and an additional test.
4  Perform low speed test in accordance with NCHRP 350 with gate in stowed position and verbally notify panel of results.
5  Prepare and submit final report and executive summary including test methods, data findings, analysis, video tape of tests, and any other pertinent information necessary to approve or reject design.
