Title: Evaluation of SDDOT's New Shoulder Surfacing
Project Researcher: Abbas Butt,
Project Manager: Daris Ormesher
Research Period: -
Status:
Cost: $0.00

Problem Statement:This study pointed out the importance of a well designed and constructed shoulder relative to maintaining mainline pavement life. Proper drainage and a good seal at the mainline/shoulder interface is very important in maintaining pavement life.

The technical panel, Region, Area and ERI personnel selected 67 test sections to be evaluated. The test sections were evaluated by visual inspection, FWD testing, and coring where possible. The sixty seven test sections were selected based on the following factors:

  • Mainline Pavement Type

  • Shoulder Type

  • Functional Classification

  • Traffic

  • Region/Area

  • Environmental Factors

  • Geological Factors

  • Drainage

  • The study presented an updated Shoulder Design Guidelines for SDDOT. The researcher also developed a Localized Preventive Maintenance Policy for shoulders. The proposed policy contains distress type, type of repair required and a typical unit cost for the repair.
