Title: Use of Maturity Meter to Place Silicone Sealant

Problem Statement:A recently completed study (SD92-03) entitled Evaluation of Silicone Joint Sealant Performance identified early sealing as one of the primary contributors to silicone joint sealant failures. The use of a method to predict the strength development and curing of new concrete pavements to more accurately judge the point where the silicone can be installed without compromising its adhesion properties could provide the means of minimizing future problems. The maturity concept and the use of a maturity meter to profile the time-temperature history of a given pavement offers a potential means of doing this. The Testing Section has already conducted extensive tests correlating compressive strength to maturity with excellent results. This research could provide an effective method of solving the problem regardless of cold temperatures or late season paving.
