Long-Term Monitoring of High Performance Concrete Bridges
As part of research project SD1998-06, the Department constructed two bridges on Interstate 29 near Sioux Falls with high-strength prestressed concrete girders and low permeability bridge decks. One structure was built in 1999, and the other in 2000. Since construction, the structures performance has been monitored through strain gages, deflection measurements, temperature sensors, and electrical resistance measurements for correlation to concrete permeability. The monitoring period originally specified by SD1998-06 will end in December 2001, so it is now up to the Department to determine whether or not to continue to monitor the bridges. Additional monitoring may help bridge engineers better understand the time dependent properties of these HPC mixes.
