SDDOT / Right-of-Way

The Right of Way Program is responsible for acquiring the property necessary for highway purposes for the State trunk system. This includes providing relocation assistance in accordance with the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Act for those displaced as a result of said acquisition.

This Program is also responsible for abandoning any right of way and/or control of access no longer needed and also transferring State Highway right of way to other governmental agencies when jurisdictional changes may occur.

The Right of Way Program also provides services for and guidance to Local Public Agencies to assure compliance with the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Act.

    The Property Management section is responsible for the management of DOT owned real properties including the lease and sale of excess property.  Also included is the administration of the billboard and junkyard control programs, administration of the TODS and LOGO advertising sign programs and issuing utility permits to occupy state highway right of way.
