Aeronautics Commission

The Aeronautics Commission supervises aeronautical facilities and activities across the state. This includes supervision and control of airports, landing fields, landing stripe, air instruction, air marking, air beacons, and all other air navigation facilities. This body gives formal approval to pass-through FAA AIP funds, State aeronautics fund grants and airport requests to use their allocated fuel tax receipts for improvements. The seven members are appointed to three-year terms by the governor.

Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of each month if there are agenda items.

Richard Pearson was born in Madison, SD on May 27, 1949. He graduated from Salem Public High School in 1967 and from SDSU with a BS in Animal Science in 1972. Richard bought a farm in Lake County in 1973 and was engaged in farming until 1993. At that time he earned a South Dakota Real Estate License. Since 1996 he has been part owner of Tailgator's Sports Bar and Restaurant which is located in Brandon, SD. Richard and his wife Christy have 5 children. Three step-daughters-Shannon, Stephany & Alex as well as daughter, Brittany and son, Landon. Richard has been flying since 1969 and at present flies an RV-3A and an RV-6A, both of which he built. He holds a FFI formation flight card for wing and flight lead, which is required for formation flight in air shows. He has been flying with the Vanguard Squadron promoting ethanol since 1993. Richard is a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), South Dakota Pilots Association (SDPA), MAAC, FFI, and Madison Aviation Enthusiasts.

Skip was born in Yankton, SD on May 31, 1947. He is a 1965 graduate of Yankton High School, a 1969 graduate of USD with a degree in Business Administration, and a 1973 graduate of USD with a Juris Doctorate degree. Skip is President/CEO of VanDerhule M/S Inc., whose primary business consists of transportation contracts with the US Postal Service, operating in six states. Skip and his wife have two grown children. Skip obtained his pilot's license in 1968. He currently owns a Mooney M-20-F. He is a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), South Dakota Pilots Association (SDPA), MAPA (Mooney Aircraft Pilots Association), and the Yankton Regional Aviation Association.
Eric Odenbach Eric Odenbach - Appointed April, 2012

Eric Odenbach was born in Aberdeen, SD December 10, 1975. He is a 1994 graduate of Eureka High School, a 1998 graduate of Southeast Technical Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering and a 2003 graduate of SDSU with a degree in Construction Management. Eric is president of Steadfast Farms L.L.C. and owns a pheasant hunting business named Greenway Guides. Eric and his wife Kelly have one daughter, Georgia and live on their farm north of Eureka. Eric earned his private pilot certificate in 2012 in Florida. He currently owns and flies a 1966 Piper Comanche 260B. He is a member of AOPA, SDPA and ICS.

Chris was born in Minneapolis, MN. He obtained Airframe / Power plant license with Inspection authorization, private, commercial, and flight instructor certificate while owning / operating Madison Aircraft LLC. Chris has been manager of the Madison Airport since 1986. He currently owns and flies a Beechcraft Bonanza, Cessna 150, 1946 Piper J3 Cub.

Chad Hatch Chad Hatch - Appointed October, 2012

Chad D. Hatch is a co-founder of Nordic Venture Partners, LLC, a Midwest venture capital firm. Mr. Hatch co-leads the overall strategy for Nordic Venture Partners. Chad has over 15 years of corporate finance, venture capital and private equity experience. He currently serves as a Board Member and CFO of Destination Golf Ventures, home of The Prairie Club, a world class destination golf course in Valentine, Nebraska. Mr. Hatch also is the managing partner of Sweet Deals, LLC, a holding company that owns & operates Dairy Queen restaurants in South Dakota.

Most recently, Mr. Hatch served as the Senior Vice President of Strategic Capital for POET, the largest integrated ethanol producer in the world. From 2006 to 2008, Chad served in various executive level positions at US BioEnergy Corporation (NASDAQ:USBE), a St. Paul based ethanol producer including CFO, Corporate Development, Finance, and Treasurer. From 2005 to 2006, Chad served as the Vice President of Capitaline Advisors, a Brookings, SD based private equity investment management firm specializing in renewable energy investments. Prior to joining Capitaline Advisors, he served as an Investment Manager of various portfolio companies for Bluestem Capital Company, a private equity firm based in Sioux Falls, SD, from 2001 to 2004. Chad also worked for McGladrey and Pullen, as a CPA from 1999 to 2001. Chad is a former US Army Officer who was based at Ft. Carson, Colorado where he served in a number of tank platoon leader positions, including leading an M1A1 tank platoon.

Chad Hatch is an active investor and serves on various boards in the region. He is an avid outdoorsman that enjoys golf, skiing, hunting, and flying. He received his private pilot certification in 2008.

Travis was born in Kearney, Nebraska. He moved to Spearfish at the end of 1985 and graduated from Spearfish High School in 1989. Travis started his flight training in 1986, earning his private license 1987. In October, 1990, he started school at Shields Aviation Academy in Jacksonville FL., returning to South Dakota in June of 1991 with his Commercial, Multi, and instrument ratings. A few years later he would finish his degree from Black Hills State University and earn his Air Transport Pilot, B – 737 - 200 and 300 certificates from Higher Power Aviation, and the FAA. Since 1989, Travis has been employed as a corporate pilot by Lantis Enterprises. In 1994 Travis accepted the additional duties of vice president of business development and as of the later part of 1998, the position of Chief Executive Officer. He and his wife Amy have four children: Kassidy, Lucas, Kali, and Kayla, all living in Spearfish. Travis has over 5000 hours as a pilot and is a member of the Lawrence County Airport Board, AOPA, and the SDPA.

Larry was raised in Murdo, South Dakota and graduated from Murdo High School in 1952. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Larry has been a business man in Murdo, Pierre and Rapid City, SD. Presently he resides in Rapid City, SD. Larry started flying in 1958 and currently flies a Piper 260 Comanche. He is a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), International Comanche Society (ICS), and the South Dakota Pilots Association (SDPA).
