March 11, 2010 - Construction Update

On March 9th the westbound lanes of I-90 were routed into the eastbound lanes where I-90 traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction for a 3.6 mile section of I-90, from the Lawrence county line to a location west of the Exit 32 interchange. In an effort to maintain access during construction, the Exit 30 westbound off ramp has been moved to a location 1/2 mile west of the Exit 30 interchange.

During this phase of construction, a width restriction of 13-ft has been imposed as a result of the limited width of the I-90 eastbound bridge at Exit 30 over Hwy 14A and Hwy 34. Eastbound overwidth traffic will by pass the narrow bridge using the Exit 30 off and onramps.

Westbound overwidth traffic can not by pass the bridge at Exit 30 due to the location of the off ramp approximately 1/2 mile west of the bridge. Westbound overwidth traffic will be directed off the interstate at Kadoka and will travel north on Hwy 73 to Hwy 34. Westbound traffic will turn left and travel west on Hwy 34 and return to the interstate in Sturgis at Exit 30 at a location west of the narrow bridge.

Bridge crews will resume work on the Exit 30 westbound bridge with demolition of the bridge barrier. Traffic on Hwy 34 and 14A (Lazelle Street) will be reduced to one lane in the westbound direction during the first phase of demolition.

This project has an interim completion date of July 28, 2010 when traffic will be returned to their respective lanes on I-90. No work will be allowed during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from July 29, 2010 to August 16, 2010.

The overall completion date for the project is October 1, 2010.

Traffic Flow Diagrams: The overwidth detour will go into effect during the period when I-90 traffic is placed in the eastbound lanes with one lane in each direction. The overwidth restriction was created due to the width of the I-90 eastbound bridge at Exit 30 during the period when traffic is in a single lane in each direction.

Westbound overwidth vehicles exceeding the 13 ft. width will be directed off of I-90 near Kadoka and routed north on Hwy 73 to the intersection of Hwy 34. Westbound overwidth traffic will turn left onto Hwy 34 and travel to Sturgis where they will be directed back onto I-90 at Exit 30. Eastbound overwidth vehicles will be directed off of I-90 at the Exit 30 eastbound off ramp and back onto I-90 using the Exit 30 eastbound on ramp.
