Aviation Hall of Fame



The South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame is a non-profit South Dakota Corporation whose sole purpose is to educate the public regarding the history of Aviation in South Dakota and the contribution of South Dakota citizens to state and worldwide aviation. Some of the more famous of these citizens are Clyde Ice, Joe Foss, Duane Corning, Nellie Willhite, and Charles Gemar. Over 150 combat air crew members have been inducted into the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame as well. Residents of South Dakota who served their country with honor while flying combat tours in the many wars of the United States from World War I to the present.

The supporters of the Hall of Fame are trying to raise funds to construct a permanent home in Spearfish, South Dakota for all of the artifacts and several airplanes that have been collected over the years.

Until then, there is a display showing the current inductees to the Aviation Hall of Fame at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, at Ellsworth Air Force Base, in Rapid City, South Dakota. They cordially invite you to visit this free display. A building fund has been established and donations are solicited for this unique South Dakota institution. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

A contribution wall will be constructed and consist of plaques showing the donor’s name and section.

Serious history buffs will want to refer to a thesis prepared in 1957 by Robert Dewey Orr for his masters in the Department of History, at the State University of South Dakota. The title of his 164 paper is "A History of Aviation in South Dakota". A copy of it resides with the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame, PO Box 481, Deadwood SD 57732.
