The state fuel system is a computerized accounting and security package that allows automated monitoring and controlling of fleet fueling activity.
Annual fuel activity analysis shows that the department spends $3 to $4 million on fuel purchases. A four-year study revealed that five percent unleaded fuel and ninety-nine percent diesel fuel is consumed by the DOT annually. The remainder of fuels purchased is consumed by other state agencies. There are currently 24 Fuel System operators in the DOT. They are qualified to perform diagnostic testing, replace fuel hardware components, are familiar with echelons of maintenance, and understand protocols (whom to contact) if problems are encountered with fuel systems. The department uses a control unit that attaches to each fuel dispenser by direct mount or use of a separate pedestal. Each unit allows direct and immediate operation of individual product hoses. Each vehicle operator interfaces with the unit by using a readable and writeable fuel key attached to the vehicle’s key ring. The fuel key automatically identifies the vehicle, department, fuel type, gallon limit, and odometer reading without needing communication to a main computer.
