The D&I Railroad operates its own track from Sioux Falls to Dell Rapids. In
November 1986, it began common carrier service between Sioux Falls and Sioux City via
trackage rights on the state-owned line between Canton and Elk Point and the branch line
from Beresford to Hawarden, IA. The following table is a line by line description of the

The D&I Railroad was originally formed to haul rock, gravel, and crushed stone
quarried at Dell Rapids and Hawarden IA. The railroad expanded its grain hauling when it
became the common carrier between Sioux Falls and Sioux City. The following figure shows
the traffic generated by the D&I Railroad in 1995.
