General Information / FAQ's

1.    How are highways financed?

All funds, Federal, State or urban come from highway users in the form of motor fuel taxes, motor vehicle registration fees and compensatory fees paid by commercial carriers. No property or other taxes are used to finance the construction or maintenance of the State Highway System. (this opens a new window)

2.    How do I find out what construction projects are coming up?

The SDDOT has a 5 year program called the STIP. You may access this information on the Planning & Programming website at this link: http://www.sddot.com/pe/projdev/planning_stip.asp

3. Does the State of South Dakota license contractors?

A Highway Contractor's license is required by any contractor who plans to perform work on Federal, State and/or county roads. This license is obtained from the Department of Revenue, Business Tax Division. (605)773-3311.

4. Do corporations register with the DOT?

No, corporations need to register with the Secretary of State's Office, Corporations Division. (605) 773-4845

5. Whom do I contact for driveway/approach permit information?

Contact your local Area DOT Office. Areas are designated here.

6. Where do I get information on Outdoor advertising, junkyards, and the Logo Sign Program?

Contact the appropriate Region Office. See the Region List to locate the correct Region Office.

7. Whom do I contact for more information about local roads within my County?

Contact your local County Highway Superintendent. You can find a list of County Officials here: http://www.sddot.com/fpa/lga/county.asp

8. Whom do I contact for more information about local roads with my City?

Contact your local City Engineer or Mayor. You can find a list of City Engineers here: http://www.sddot.com/fpa/lga/city.asp

9. How do I know which Region or Area to contact?

Click here for a list of regions and their associated counties.

10. How does my group "Adopt-A-Highway"?

You need to contact the Area Office closest to your location (city).   Click here for contact information - scroll down under Division of Operations & find the AREA ENGINEER located closest to you. You can contact them by phone or e-mail.

11. Where do I get Motor Carrier information?

Go to www.sdtruckinfo.com for all your motor carrier and permitting needs.

12. How do I obtain a permit for overweight or oversize vehicles?

Permits may be requested and obtained by telephone, fax, letter, or in person from the Ports of Entry. Highway Patrol District Offices, Troopers, and Inspectors also issue oversize and overweight permits. Go to www.sdtruckinfo.com for more information on permitting & other trucking information.

13. How can I get a state tourist map?

Office of Tourism can provide you with a wide variety of maps. (605) 773-3301 or 1-800-S-DAKOTA (Tourism).
