Work To Begin On U.S. Highway 281 Near Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin work Monday (July 23) in the Aberdeen area on U.S. Highway 281, from the end of the divided highway segment located three miles north of Aberdeen to the north junction of Highway 10.

The first phase of the 16-point-eight mile project will use gravel to raise two segments of the existing roadway about one-foot. That work is expected to take three to four weeks.

After the road level is raised, it will be paved with asphalt concrete.

Traffic will be controlled with a pilot car and flaggers during working hours.

Motorists will encounter loose gravel on raised surface locations before they are paved and are advised to reduce speeds on those stretches or choose an alternate route.

The completion date is Sept. 15, and the prime contractor on the $10.5 million project is Border States Paving, Inc.
