State Transportation Department Official Wins National Honor

PIERRE, S.D. – The public information officer for the South Dakota Department of Transportation (AASHTO) has received a national award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The group’s Subcommittee on Transportation Communications honored Kristi Sandal of Pierre at its annual conference this month in Raleigh, N.C., with a Special Recognition Award.

The national award is presented periodically in recognition of the unique contributions, unprecedented efforts or achievements of individuals, public figures or organizations in advancing the causes and work of the subcommittee.

Nominations are accepted year-round. Presentations are made when appropriate. There is no guarantee that an award will be made each year. There is also no limit on the number of awards that may be presented in a single year.

Previously, the Special Recognition Award was given out in 2007 and 2009.

Sandal has worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation for 25 years and has served as the public information officer for the last three years.

Sandal was nominated for the AASHTO award by Kellie Beck, director of finance and management, South Dakota Department of Transportation.
