Construction To Begin On Highway 12 between Waubay and Summit

ABERDEEN, S.D. – On Monday, April 29, crews will begin emplacement of traffic control for the first phase of a concrete paving project on the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 12 between Waubay and Summit.

Once traffic control is ready, work will begin to place a concrete overlay in the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 between Waubay and the I-29 exit, which will take about three or four weeks.

Traffic from the Highway 12 eastbound lanes will be placed head-to-head in the westbound lanes, with a 12-foot-width restriction and reduced speed to 55 mph. That segment must be finished within 75 working days.

The next phase of the project will be removal and replacement of concrete surfacing on Highway 12 from the I-29 exit to the Summit entrance.

During the second phase, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with no vehicles longer than 70 feet.  Traffic will be controlled 24 hours a day by a combination of signals, pilot cars and flaggers. That segment must be finished within 60 calendar days.

The project has an interim completion date of Oct. 18 for all work on the actual roadway and an overall completion date of Nov. 1.

The prime contractor for the $9.6 million project is Knife River Midwest, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa.
