Pavement Repairs To Begin In Hughes County

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin a concrete pavement repair and asphalt resurfacing project Monday, May 20, on Highway 14 in Hughes County.

In the first phase, crews will repair the pavement and reshape shoulders on Sioux Avenue in Pierre and on Highway 14 from seven miles east of Garfield Avenue (truck bypass) to the Highway 83 junction west of Blunt.

The next phase will include asphalt paving eastward for about eight miles on Highway 14 from the truck route in Pierre. The contractor anticipates starting that portion of the project in late July.

Traffic will be maintained through the construction areas using single-lane closures on Sioux Avenue and temporary stop signs on Highway 14 east of Pierre.  Flaggers may also be present during the shoulder work.

Once the asphalt paving begins, flaggers and a pilot car will be guide traffic through the work zone.  Motorists can expect longer delays during that time.

The overall completion date for the project is Oct. 11.

The prime contractor on the $5 million project is Morris, Inc. of Pierre.
