Work on Highways 85 and 385 Near Lead to Begin

 

LEAD, S.D. – Construction work is set to begin on Highway 85 from
Lead to the Pluma junction on Wednesday, May 22, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

 

Crews will begin on the east shoulder of Highway 85 between Lead and Pluma with work to include placement of traffic control devices, guardrail removal, excavation and placement of bank and channel protection, and guardrail replacement.

 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and assisted through the work area by flaggers during working hours. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during non-working hours.

 

Work on the $3.6 million project involves work on both Highway 85 and Highway 385 from Merritt Estes Road to Strawberry Hill scheduled to begin June 1.

 

Work specific to each highway is listed below:

  • Highway 85 from Lead to the Pluma Junction
    • Milling and replacement of existing surfacing
    • Bank and channel protection involving gabion basket placement
    • Guardrail replacement
    • Surfacing work scheduled to begin after milling on Highway 385 is completed

 

  • US Hwy 385 from Merritt Estes Road to Strawberry Hill
    • Milling and replacement of existing surfacing
    • Pipe work including drop inlets, pipe extensions, and pipe cleanout
    • Guardrail replacement

                                                                                                                                             

The completion date for the project is early October with an interim completion date of August 21 for Highway 85. Work that impacts traffic will be suspended during the Days’ of ’76 rodeo (July 22-27), the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (July 27-August 11) and during Kool Deadwood Nights (August 21-25).

 

Bituminous Paving, Inc. of Ortonville, Minnesota is the contractor.
