Truck Route Traffic Flow to Change in Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising the public of the following change to traffic flow on the Highway 14/83 truck route in Pierre. These changes are scheduled to occur as early as Wednesday, Aug. 27, weather permitting, and will remain in place until the end of September.

Traffic from the south will remain in one lane each direction to the north side of Southgate Drive and will then be directed onto the west side of the new highway on an asphalt primed surface to the north end of the project. The gravel surfaced traffic diversion adjacent to the east side of the project will no longer be in use.

Stop signs will remain set-up on 4th Street and on Airport Road until the new traffic signals are installed. Truck route traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and is not required to stop for cross-street traffic.

The median crossover on Highway 14 between the truck route and Windsor Place, located at Kingsway Road and North Airport Road, remains closed to traffic. A turn lane has been constructed in the median crossover at Windsor Place for eastbound to northbound traffic. Westbound traffic needing to turn left onto North Airport Road should use the truck route during the temporary median crossover closure.

Temporary traffic signals remain in place on portable trailers at the intersection of 4th Street and Euclid Avenue.

A 14-foot width restriction remains in effect for the duration of the project, with a signed over width detour provided around the Oahe Dam. Access to businesses along the project is being maintained.

Weekly public meetings are being held at the Pierre Mall, located at the top of the truck route, every Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

Traffic flow maps and more information on this project are available at http://www.sddot.com/travelers/projects/truckroutepierre/Default.aspx.

The prime contractor on the $6.1 million project is Morris Inc. of Pierre.

The overall completion date is Oct. 31.
