SPEARFISH, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says a meeting to discuss the construction of the intersection of 27th Street and 1st Avenue in Spearfish is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at Spearfish City Hall in Council Chambers located at 625 5th St.

Reconstruction of the intersection of 27th Street and 1st Avenue has been difficult to perform while maintaining traffic. To complete the remaining portions of the intersection in a timely manner, the contractor and the department are proposing to close 1st Avenue at the intersection with 27th Street to trucks, trailers and campers. Vehicles in excess of 20 feet long and/or 7 feet wide will be required to use the detour route. This work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 14, 2017

The detour around the intersection will be to the north of the intersection on 27th Street and Industrial Drive.

Motorists are asked to slow down through the work zone, be on the lookout for flaggers, and be prepared for suddenly slowing, merging, and stopped traffic as well as construction workers and equipment entering, exiting, and adjacent to the roadway.

Heavy Constructors, Inc., of Rapid City is the prime contractor on this $28 million project. The overall completion date for the project is June 1, 2018.
