MISSION, S.D. – In keeping with the mission of the South Dakota Department of Transportation to provide a safe and efficient transportation system, the department has recently activated three new traffic signals in Mission as part of the reconstruction of U.S. Highway 18.

The Department expects that the new signals, along with a new five lane highway that includes a center turn lane, will substantially improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists along Highway 18 and through the town of Mission.

Another feature of the project includes new LED street lighting for the length of the project. The new LED lights produce much sharper illumination of the highway and sidewalk areas recently reconstructed as part of this project.

Work on this two year project is nearing completion for 2017 and should be fully open to traffic by Nov. 27.

Work on phase 2 of the project will resume in the spring and will primarily focus on Highway 83 from Mission south for approximately one mile. Roughly 1,000 feet of Highway 18 east of the junction with Highway 83 will also be reconstructed.
