Highway 85 through Belle Fourche
What is being built?
Highway 85 is being reconstructed from Hay Creek to the Belle Fourche River (1.1 miles). The project consists of widening the highway to accommodate five lanes of traffic. The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with concrete pavement. The bridge over Hay Creek will receive a concrete overlay and concrete approach slabs. Other work will consist of new storm sewers, curb and gutter, new sidewalks, traffic signals and street lighting. A city contract will upgrade the city water and sanitary sewer system in this area.
Two-way traffic with minimum lane widths of 11 ft will be maintained through the project during construction. Parallel parking will be eliminated as construction progresses. Left turns will be limited to intersections with traffic signals or all-way stops during construction

Work in Progress (updated bi-weekly)
Week of July 26, 2010
The construction zone has been extended up to the bridge over the Belle Fourche River. The construction zone now runs from the Belle Fourche River to Hay Creek. This encompasses the entire project.
Two-way traffic is running on the new southbound lanes from Roundup Street to the bridge over Hay Creek.
Two-way traffic is running on the northbound lanes from Roundup Street to the bridge over the Belle Fourche River.
Construction of the new northbound lanes from the bridge over Hay Creek to the courthouse is almost complete. The new city water and sewer services have been installed between Lawrence Street and the Courthouse. The new storm sewer connections have been installed between the bridge over Hay Creek and the Courthouse.
Construction of the new southbound lanes from the bridge over the Belle Fourche River to State Street is underway. New storm sewer has been installed from Faulk Street to Grant Street. Installation of the new city sewer line and services between Grant and State Street will begin this week.
Access to the downtown businesses is being maintained on the existing sidewalk.
Lawrence Street has been opened with a no left turn restriction.
No parking is allowed from National Street to Faulk Street.
Faulk, Grant and Railroad Streets will be closed and opened as necessary during construction. One of the three streets will be open at all times.
Two-way traffic with minimum lane widths of 11 ft will be maintained through the project.
Access to the courthouse alley(s), Indian, Kingsbury and Meade streets from hwy 85 will not be allowed during construction.
All left turns between Faulk Street and National Street should be restricted to the intersections at State, Roundup, Jackson and National Streets. These four intersections are setup as all-way stops.
Local delivery trucks may be unable to make their typical left or right turns within the construction zone and therefore need to consider alternate routes.
