Chip Seal Work to Begin on Various State Highways in the Sioux Falls Area
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin chip seal work on various state highways on July 19. The chip seal work will take three to four weeks to complete.
The following routes will be affected by the chip seal work:
- SD 42 from SD 17 west 13 miles – length 13.0 miles;
- SD 11 from US 18 south to SD 46 – length 15.0 miles
Traffic will be controlled by flaggers and pilot car. Travel delays can be expected. Loose gravel will be present for 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip seal.

Concrete Pavement Repair at various locations around Sioux Falls
Location: I29 southbound at the I90 interchange, SD 38/60th Street N at I29, 26th Street at I29, Benson Road from Cliff Ave to I229, & 6th Street over I229
Description of Work: Concrete Pavement Repair and Curb & Gutter Repair
The Contractor intends to start work on Monday August 25, 2008. They plan to start on SD 38/ 60th Street N from Marion Road to just east of Kiwanis Ave. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the work zone. The contractor will be removing broken concrete full depth and replacing it.
Traffic Affects: Some work zones will be posted for reduced speed. Travelers are urged to use caution and slow down when workers are present and obey all signing. The scheduled project completion date is November 7, 2008.

1. Highway: Interstate 90
Location: I90 Eastbound from west of Exit 390 to east of Exit 396
Description of Work:Grading, PCCP, Structures, AC Resurfacing & Guardrail
Knife River Midwest - Crews continue paving operations on I90 EB, working towards the beginning of the project.
Runge Enterprises - Crews started placing gravel cushion salvage for the shoulders and continue miscellaneous grading operations along I90 EB near Marion Road.
Industrial Builders - Crews continue placing concrete for the barrier curbs at the bridge over Skunk Creek.
Sioux Falls Construction - Crews continue work on structure rehabilitation at various locations.
Dakota Traffic Services - Traffic control maintenance.
Brandt LS - Miscellaneous staking and setting grade stakes for the paving operations.
The project has an overall completion date of September 26, 2008.
Traffic Affects: I90 traffic will remain head to head on the Westbound Lanes from just west of Exit 390 to just west of Exit 396 until the completion of the project. Travelers utilizing this section of I90 may encounter delays. Below is a list of ramp closures associated with the project.
Exit 390: SD38 to I90 EB - Ramp Closed

2. Highway: SD 11
Location: On Hwy 11 from approximately 2000 feet south of 26th Street to Hwy 42
Description of Work: Grading, Structure, PCC Pavement, Asphalt Concrete Surfacing, Traffic Signal, Curb & Gutter, and Storm Sewer
Traffic Affects: Northbound lanes are now open and the intersection of Highway 11 and 26th Street is being controlled with the traffic signal. Highway 11 north of 26th Street is still closed to thru traffic.

3. Highway: SD 115
Location: Hwy 115 / Minnesota Ave. from 69th Street to 85th Street
Description of Work:Grading, Storm Sewer, Curb and Gutter, PCC Paving, Lighting, Pavement Marking, and Permanent Signing
Construction Signing Corporation is maintaining traffic control devices from 69th Street to 85th Street.
Upper Plains Contracting is paving the south bound turn lanes at LaQuinta Street, 77th Street and future 81st Street.
Traffic Affects: SD Hwy 115 Minnesota Ave. is open to through traffic. Traffic is head to head on the newly constructed northbound lanes throughout the entire length of the project. Work will resume in the spring of 2008 to construct the west side of the project which will be the south bound lanes. Access will be maintained to local businesses and residents throughout the duration of the project.
The project has an overall completion date of August 8, 2008.

Construction Signing Corporation is maintaining traffic control devices for phase 1 traffic control devices from SD Hwy 42 to 26th Street.
Runge Enterprises is continuing grading activities for the northbound lanes.
T&R Contracting has completed paving the southbound lanes.
Dakota Road Builders continues placing gravel cushion and base course.
Traffic Affects: SD Hwy 11 will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday May 19th from 26th Street to SD Hwy 42/Arrow Head Parkway. The detour is 26th Street to Sycamore Ave. to SD 42/ Arrowhead Parkway. Access will be maintained to local residents throughout the duration of the project. The anticipated completion of the Hwy 11 southbound lanes is late July. Hwy 11 traffic will be switched to the new constructed southbound lanes in a head to head condition throughout the entire length of the project. The northbound lanes will then be constructed.
The project has an overall completion date of October 31, 2008.

5. Highway: Lincoln County 116 (Klondike Road)
Location: On Lincoln Co. Hwy 116 from approximately Interstate 29 to SD Hwy 17
Description of Work: Road Reconstruction, Structure and Approach Grading
Phase I:
Loiseau Construction will continue grading in the west mile of Phase I of the project. The remainder of Phase I has been rough graded and salvaged base course has been placed at the bridge ends and in localized areas on the project. Beginning the week of August 11, 2008, Swingen Construction will begin the removal of the existing box culvert located approximately 1.75 miles west of Interstate 29. Residences between the new bridge over Beaver Creek and the existing box culvert will have access to their property by the township roads west of the bridge and traveling over the new bridge. The Contractor anticipates beginning work in Phase 2 of the project by August 25, 2008. Traffic will be switched to the Phase 2 detour at that time.
Traffic Affects: The roadway will remain closed to thru traffic but local traffic will have access to residences and businesses located within the project limits. The detour for Phase I of the project from Interstate 29 to Lincoln Co. 116 West is as follows:
- From Lincoln County 116 to south on Lincoln County Hwy 111 to west on SD Hwy 44 to north on SD Hwy 17 to west on Lincoln Co. Hwy 116

Location: From I29 at the Canton Exit east to SD 11 north, just west of Canton
Description of Work: Cold Milling Asphalt Concrete and Asphalt Concrete Resurfacing
There will be some minor work performed at driveways adding gravel. Also the area disturbed at mailbox locations will be re-seeded in August.
Traffic Affects: Travelers are urged to use caution and slow down when workers are present and obey all signing.
The project has an overall completion date of October 3, 2008.
