Rally Travelers

This page is to provide information on major projects that may impact travelers headed to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It includes projects of note, links to the statewide construction map, and a downloadable map of the Black Hills area construction.

Getting there

I-90
Location: Exit 61 in Rapid City.
Project: Interchange reconstruction.
What to expect: Ramp diversions in place. East-bound traffic limited to one lane.
Minor delays may be possible.

SD34
Location: From Wyoming State line to Belle Fourche.
Project: Chip seal project.
What to expect: Possible loose chips. No restrictions, no delay expected.

US85
Location: North of Belle Fourche.
Project: Chip seal project.
What to expect: Possible loose chips. No restrictions, no delay expected.

US 212
Location: Northwest out of Belle Fourche (MRM 7.9-13.4).
Project: Pavement joint saw and seal project.
What to expect: Limited lane closures. No restrictions, no delay expected.

Rest of South Dakota

US 12
Location: Between Mobridge and McLaughlin.
Project: Bridge repair work on five different bridges.
What to expect: One lane traffic across bridges. Traffic controlled by stop lights/signal lights. Delays of one minute or less at each bridge. 10 foot width restriction in place.
Suggestions: Overwidth vehicles take signed detour on Highways SD20 and SD63.

US 14
Location: Huron East 4.0 Miles, MRM 348.0 to MRM 352.0
Project: Asphalt Surface Treatment (Chip Seal)
What to expect: All work with the exception of striping has been completed. Only small amount of loose chips remain.
Suggestions: Alternative route suggestions (SD 28 or SD 34)

US 14/US 281
Location: Wolsey south and east 8 miles, MRM 330.8 to MRM 338.8.
Project: Chip sealing.
What to expect: All work with the exception of striping has been completed. Only small amount of loose chips remain.
Suggestions: Alternative route suggestions (US 12 or SD 34)

I-29
Location: White/Bruce Exit 140 to Toronto/Estelline Exit 150.
Type of Project: PCC Paving.
What to expect: Interstate traffic is maintained head-to-head in the existing northbound lanes – minimal delay.

I-29/I-90 Interchange
Location: Sioux Falls I-29/I-90 Interchange (MRM 390 to 396 westbound)
Project: The westbound lanes of I-90 are being reconstructed.
What to expect: I-90 traffic is being maintained through the project head to head in the eastbound lanes. I-29 on-ramps to westbound I-90 are closed. I-29 traffic desiring to go west on I-90 has been detoured to Exit 83 (SD38).
Suggestions: Consider alternative routes.

I-29
Location: From Sioux City to Elk Point - south bound only.
Project: Filling ruts in roadway with asphalt concrete.
What to expect: One lane closed - Reduced speed 45 mph, July 23 thru August 3.
Suggestions: Allow extra time.

SD 37
Location: From SD50 west of Tyndall to 4 miles south of Tripp.
Project: Grinding off the surface and placing an asphalt concrete overlay.
What to expect: One lane closed, flaggers and pilot car - 10 to 15 minute delays.
Suggestions: Allow extra time. Motorcycles use caution - "grooved road." July 23 thru August 24.

SD 44/SD 19
Location: SD44 in Parker, and SD19 on the East edge of Parker.
Project: Asphalt Concrete Overlay.
What to expect: One lane closed, 10 to 15 minutes delays, flaggers and pilot car. July 23 thru August 10.
Suggestions: Allow extra time.

US 212
Location: Doland to Frankfort, MRM 319.0 to MRM 327.3
Project: Grading
What to expect: ROAD CLOSED TO TRAFFIC - Detour on Spink Co. # 3, SD 28 & US 281
Suggestions: Alternative route suggestions (SD 20, SD 28, US 14, US 12)

US 281/US 212
Location: SD28 through Redfield.
Project: Chip sealing.
What to expect: Work from August 6 to August 24, Fresh Oil / Loose Gravel, flaggers, pilot car, slow traffic.
Suggestions: Alternative route suggestions (SD 37 or SD 47), Allow Extra time (Suggested Speed 40 mph or less).
